Jobb i Sør-Afrika

Teach a Child
Working with children at various age levels can be very rewarding for any volunteer who loves working with children. The volunteer should indicate which age group they would like to work wirh.
Situated in Kayamandi Township is Ikaya Primary School. Ikaya is a very challenging placement as they have approximately 1600 learners and 39 teachers. Ages at the school ranges from 6 to 15 years. Most learners at the school come from very poor families in the surrounding areas. They offer foundation phase to senior classes at the school.
There are various high schools situated in and around local disadvantaged communities. Volunteers assist these on a daily basis. The ages of learners range from 13 to 18 years.
Based within most local communities, crèches or pre schools often have very little resources. Most of the staff have little or no formal training in early child care development and receive in service training at the crèche. A lot of understanding and patience is therefore required. Ages range 3 months old babies to 6 year olds. Duties vary from feeding, playing, and teaching to helping with preparing meals, making educational toys and learning aids.

Coaching/Sports Development
The sports volunteer program operates in schools right across the Western Cape. Children are taught the basic skills of a variety of sports codes, as well as life skills. They also have the chance to play on sports teams after school, competing against other schools. SASTS works in partnership with The Future Factory, a well community sports coaching and development organisation based in Cape Town.

Social Welfare
This category of projects need help in various areas including:
  • homes for abandoned children
  • homes for abused women and children
  • orphanages
  • homes for physically and mentally challenged children
  • safe havens for women & children

Place of hope is registered as a not for profit organisation addressing the needs of street sex workers and homeless people. Their work with this group of marginalised individuals (mainly women) results in an increasing level of awareness in society and a series of ad hoc efforts to provide care and support for these women has ensued. With time it became clear that a more structured, intensive and sustainable response was required and a search for premises suitable for this purpose began. This culminated in the hostel facilities of AW Baker House (renamed Place of Hope) being leased in 2001.

Healthcare and HIV/Aids
This is a very challenging environment where volunteers work in local community clinics and day hospitals. Some experience or exposure to the medical field is required. It is important to note that although a volunteer may have some medical background or has currently completed studies, he/she is still restricted in terms of the activities that they can assist with. Initially volunteers will only be observing, once they become more acquainted with daily routines and with the staff, they will be given more to do. Relationships fostered on this project with fellow work colleagues and volunteers will last you a life time.

Habitat for Humanity
This project aims to address the harsh realities of life for the poor and unsheltered. Volunteers have an opportunity to physically construct and built a house for a family in a local community over a 4 week period.
